Tip 5: Identifying Your Competitors Differences and Similarities Using VantagePoint List Comparison

Looking for insights as to what’s unique or common between companies or authors? Consider using the List Comparison feature of VantagePoint. It identifies either what’s in common or unique between two VantagePoint lists or fields, i.e., two competitor’s document classification lists or the list of words and phrases found in one inventor’s patent claims compared to a second inventor’s.

Past Tips

  1. Shape Your Analysis To Meet Your Needs
  2. Deliver Your Analysis On Your Terms
  3. Focus Your Analysis On What Is Important
  4. Streamline Your Analysis With DIY Thesauri

If you have any suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered in a future video, use our contact form.

Tip 1: Shape Your Analysis To Meet Your Needs

This tip is about using thesaurus to redefine the content of a field. Often times, what we as analysts understand, needs to be made clearer for our audience. For example, not everyone knows the patent country code DE stands for Germany or ZA for South Africa. View a briefly introduction to the library of Thesauruses that comes with VantagePoint followed with a demonstration on how thesaurus are applied to enhance field content.

Tip 2: Deliver Your Analysis On Your Terms

This tip could change your relationship with VantagePoint. Instead of using the application occasionally, say to clean data, understanding data grouping will turn VantagePoint into your go-to analysis software. Grouping your data will give the meaning and emphasis you need to convey the best possible analysis.

Tip 3: Focus Your Analysis On What Is Important

Imagine your analyzing thousands of publications and you need to identify among all the authors and among all the affiliations or companies, not only who works where but focus on those authors from are particular company. Using VantagePoint to group lists using matrix is the perfect answer to this challenge.

Tip 4: Streamline Your Analysis With DIY Thesauri

For this tip I’ll be discussing grouping terms on a list with thesauri and ways to build thesauri from the groups. We always return to the idea of analysis on your terms. Thesauri allow you to categorize lists, for example, a list of words and phrases from titles and abstracts, with groups you’ve identified and labeled with your alias’. As thesauri are saved, the link between terms and alias is maintained, thus making thesauri powerful tools that are easily applied analysis to analysis. Follow along as we cover the steps involved.

Thank you for your interest in VantagePoint. Watch this video below for more information about how VantagePoint can help you with your analytical needs.

27 November 2018

Fixed several bugs in Dual-View List Cleanup Confirmation dialog:

  • Type-to-filter inconsistency: The 2nd time a string was typed into the type-to-filter box, the view would not filter until more characters were typed. For example, typing “dep” would correctly filter the view; canceling the operation with “x” restored the view. Immediately typing “dep” again would not filter the view until another character was typed, such as “dept”. Fixed. (6644)
  • The Find operation would search only the items that have been displayed in the dialog. Fixed. (6616)
  • When editing an item in the list, if the user performs another action before completing the edit, errors would occur and occasionally Derwent Data Analyzer would crash. Fixed. (6696 and 6707)
  • When editing an item in the list, keyboard left- and right-arrows would not move the text insertion cursor. Fixed. (6699)

Other fixes and enhancements

  • Editing items of a Child field in List view of the Parent field would sometimes cause Derwent Data Analyzer to crash. Fixed. (6702)
  • Editing items in List View (Edit Item Text) with leading/trailing whitespace would lead to incorrect duplicate items. Fixed. (6687)
  • When the “Manage Record Classifications” dialog was closed with the button, the main Derwent Data Analyzer window would go behind the other windows open on the desktop. Fixed. (6656)
  • A multi-threading bug occasionally caused a crash when importing only one record in CSV format. Fixed. (6683 and 6714)
  • Automatically Set Meta Tag training field for appropriate fields if not otherwise specified in the dataset. (6703)
  • In Thesaurus Editor, changed to interrupt execution of Apply Thesaurus on first instance of any invalid Regular Expression. Previously, the operation would continue and report the invalid RegEx for every item. Now it breaks out of the loop on the first error and copies the invalid RegEx to the clipboard. (6747)
  • In Thesaurus Editor, fixed bug in “Find” operation that prevented finding Regular Expressions that include start or end anchors. (6747)
  • Fixed a crash that occasionally occurred when the user clicked on a dialog many times very quickly. (6725)
  • Fixed bug in REPORT/Matrix Viewer that would not distinguish between matrix row and column items when the matrix is created from different groups of the same field. (6615)
  • Fixed bug exporting Bubble Charts and Gantt Charts to Internet Explorer.
  • Improved “Test Network Connection” in the “Manage License” dialog to be more diagnostic.
  • Thesaurus updates to IPC code definitions and the Academic, Corporate, Government, Individual thesaurus for making groups.
  • Fixed a bug in the Japanese and Chinese UI versions that gave import errors and in some situations would crash when importing NLP Words and Phrases (6780)
  • Corrected several translations in the Japanese and Chinese user interface (6558)
  • Updated the Japanese and Chinese Reader Help file (6576)
  • Fixed links for DDA Product Support and renewals (6600)

We are pleased to announce the release of a major update for VantagePoint. Version 11 adds several new features and tools to the VantagePoint suite.  The highlights are outlined below.

Downloading and installing VantagePoint v11

Details on upgrading from an earlier version and transitioning from 32-bit to 64-bit versions can be found on our website in the upgrade FAQ.

Enhancements to List Cleanup tools

Our data cleaning tools have always been one of the most powerful and popular tools in VantagePoint.  VPv11 introduces two major enhancements to List Cleanup. Click this link to see a video demonstration.

Side-by-Side views of the List Cleanup Confirmation Window

New Dual View Cleanup Confirmation window features two synchronized views on your cleaned data which includes ...

  • Drag-and-drop capability for combining items within and between windows
  • Highlighting items that were combined by a thesaurus before cleanup
  • Type-to-filter to narrow viewed results in each window
  • Five display options for each window (All, Combined, Uncombined, etc.)
  • Graphic overview that summarizes the cleanup progress
  • New tool to delete items from the final field (i.e. cleanup by deletion), accessed using the right-click menu

VPv11 RelNotes List Cleanup 1

Apply a User-Managed Thesaurus as a part of the List Cleanup Workflow

The VPv11 List Cleanup dialog has been simplified and adds an option to apply a thesaurus before applying the cleanup ruleset.  This makes it easier to use user-managed thesauri in the list cleanup workflow.

Enhanced network visualizations for Cluster Map, Matrix Viewer, and Correlation Maps

    Cluster Map

There are big enhancements to the Cluster Map in VPv11.  Cluster Map was first introduced in VPv10 as a replacement for the retired Aduna Cluster Maps, which was in earlier versions of VantagePoint.  VPv11 extends Cluster Map to include more tools to filter, highlight, and interact with the map.  The illustration below points out several of these tools.  Users that are acquainted with VPv10 and the earlier Aduna maps will notice that we have now added back the little yellow balls that represent records in the cluster, where possible.  If there are too many records in the cluster to render the yellow balls, the map shows the number of records in the cluster.

VPv11 RelNotes Cluster Maps1

   Matrix Viewer

We have added new controls to the Matrix View to allow you to independently filter the nodes and links.  When viewing a graphic of a co-occurrence matrix, the row items can be filtered using the orange node-slider (e.g., in the illustration filtered to nodes with 60+ records); the column items, using the blue node-slider (shown here unfiltered with 1+ records); and the co-occurrence between row and column items filtered (or "flooded") using the gray line-slider (shown here flooded to show interactions of 10+ records).

VPv11 RelNotes Matrix Viewer

When you are viewing a visualization from a correlation matrix, which is a symmetric matrix in VantagePoint, only one field is shown.  You filter the nodes using the orange node-slider and the correlation links using the gray line-slider.

VPv11 RelNotes Matrix Viewer2

   Correlation Maps

Cross-correlation, Auto-correlation, and Factor Maps have been converted to D3 implementations that provide easier interaction and manual rearrangement of the nodes.  A new node filter is included, and the link filters have been moved to the legend.  Using the right-click menu, you can show or hide the legend and show all the information boxes at once.  You can also edit the title of the map.

VPv11 RelNotes Correlation Maps1

If you prefer the older ("Classic", v10 and earlier) version of the correlation maps, we have included a checkbox at the bottom of the Create Map dialog that allows you to create the older style maps.  This option will eventually be retired in future releases as we build more of the classic options into the new maps.

New visualization tools for Bubble Chart and Gantt Chart

Bubble Charts and Timeline Gantt Charts have also been converted to D3 visualizations.  New features on the Gantt chart include sorting rows (number of records, alpha, reverse-alpha), resizing, editing the chart title, and highlighting the selection on the y-axis.

VPv11 RelNotes Gantt Chart1

New Bubble charts add the ability to sort columns and toggle showing or hiding the record number count.

Improved support and maintenance by "pushing" notification of updates to import filters, scripts, and thesauri.

VPv11 adds a new tool to help you keep VantagePoint up-to-date using "push" notifications from our web site.  We have always provided updates via our download pages.  But before VPv11, you may not know there is an update available until you go looking for it.  Now beginning with VPv11, VantagePoint periodically checks your import filters, scripts, thesarui, and other components against the latest versions on the download page.  When a newer version is available, you will see a small notification bar under the ribbon.

 VPv11 RelNotes Update1

When you click "Select files to update", you will see a list of the new components along with tools and instructions about how to download and install them.

Redesigned many user interface components adding type-to-filter tools for field selection

Many VantagePoint user-interface dialogs have been redesigned to have similar look-and-feel and implement type-to-filter capability, which makes selecting fields easier.

VPv11 RelNotes New Dialogs

These dialogs have been redesigned: Create List, List Cleanup, Thesaurus, Bubble Chart, Gantt Chart, Cluster Map, Super Profile, Plot Classifications, Calculate Emergence, Browse Classification Tree, Manage Fields (Copy, Delete, Rename), Export Fielded Records, Export Raw Records, Combine Groups, Move Groups, Count Terms per Record, and Field Order for Record View.

Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other enhancements

  • Excel Import
    • multi-select fields and assign Field Type in one step
    • set and save a default delimiter
  • Super Profile - can create the profile in both VantagePoint sheet and Excel in one action
  • Reworked Export Fielded Records from 3-step wizard to a single dialog
  • Move the following VB scripts to embedded operations (performance improvement)
    • REFINE/Count Terms per Record
    • REFINE/Combine Groups
    • REFINE/Move Groups
  • Enable or disable row and column resizing in List and Matrix View

16 November 2018 - VPv11.0.25115 Update - Release Notes

Fixed several bugs in Dual-View List Cleanup Confirmation dialog:

  • Type-to-filter inconsistency: The 2nd time a string was typed into the type-to-filter box, the view would not filter until more characters were typed. For example, typing “dep” would correctly filter the view; canceling the operation with “x” restored the view. Immediately typing “dep” again would not filter the view until another character was typed, such as “dept”. Fixed. (6644)
  • The Find operation would search only the items that have been displayed in the dialog. Fixed. (6616)
  • When editing an item in the list, if the user performs another action before completing the edit, errors would occur and occasionally VantagePoint would crash. Fixed. (6696 and 6707)
  • When editing an item in the list, keyboard left- and right-arrows would not move the text insertion cursor. Fixed. (6699)

Other fixes and enhancements

  • Editing items of a Child field in List view of the Parent field would sometimes cause VantagePoint to crash. Fixed. (6702)
  • Editing items in List View (Edit Item Text) with leading/trailing whitespace would lead to incorrect duplicate items. Fixed. (6687)
  • When the “Manage Record Classifications” dialog was closed with the button, the main VantagePoint window would go behind the other windows open on the desktop. Fixed.

Details on upgrading from an earlier version and transitioning from 32-bit to 64-bit versions can be found on our website in the upgrade FAQ.

Automatically Classify Records introduces a new artificial intelligence tool in VantagePoint

VPv10.0 introduces a brand new tool to assist the Record Classification task.  You define your Classification fields (one or more), specify the training fields (e.g., titles and abstracts).  Then begin manually classifying some records.  VantagePoint analyzes your classifications and gives you a continuous assessment of its confidence in auto-classifying the remainder of the records.  When you decide the confidence is high enough, you can release the auto-classifier to do the rest.  When VantagePoint is not confident enough to classify a particular record, it places it in a special group so you can review it later.
VPv10-auto-classifier-800

Find Similar Records tool aids data exploration and record classification

From the Record View, click the radar icon to find records that are similar records to the records you are viewing. VP uses the training fields for Auto-classification to find similar records.  The records and a percent similarity measure are presented in another window.

New workflow-oriented interface improves the user’s experience

VantagePoint v10.0's new workflow-oriented interface improves the user's experience by arranging all tools and operations into the 4 basic analysis steps: import, refine, analyze, and report.

Ribbon toolbar

The new ribbon toolbar provides quick and easy access to all of VantagePoint's tools.  There are seven ribbons in the new design: Home, Refine, Analyze, Report, Editors, View, and Help.

The Home ribbon has the tools you need to start a new analysis, open and save files, perform frequent tasks, and manage sheets in your dataset.
VPv10 Home Ribbon

The Refine ribbon has many tools that help you work with datasets, fields, and groups.
VPv10 Refine Ribbon

The Analyze ribbon contains VantagePoint's tools for deep exploration of your data.  It is also the gateway to VantagePoint's scripting engine for specialized and customized tools and workflow.

New Cluster Map Visualization (on the Report ribbon)

We are pleased to announce the release of our new Cluster Map tool that delivers much of the same visual analytic power as the popular Aduna visualization.  This new script has better integration with VantagePoint’s user interface, and provides a fully supported foundation for future enhancement and development.  (The Aduna visualization has been retired because of Java security concerns, compatibility problems, and a persistent lack of updates and support from the 3rd party provider.)

New View Records options

VantagePoint has added two new options for viewing multiple records in the "Show Fields" Record View.  In addition to the traditional way as a table, you can view each record on a separate row or column.

Updates to Calculate Emergence Indicators (now on the Analyze ribbon)

Emergence is upgraded with the addition of Emergence Scoring (patent pending), which is selected by default.  It will create a score for a set of terms appearing in a dataset. These scores can then also be used to calculate scores for secondary indicators such as Authors, Affiliations, Countries and new in version 10.0, individual records via scoring of Titles. Major speed improvements in VPv10.0 have also drastically cut run time on large scale datasets allowing for faster scoring and more opportunities for fine tuning results.

Updates to Super Profile (now on the Report ribbon)

We have made styling and functional improvements for the embedded Super Profile sheets, including resizable columns and sticky header on scroll.

Embedded browser removes dependence on IE version

Previous versions of VantagePoint used external browsers, specifically Windows Internet Explorer, for many dialogs and visualizations.  Technological changes in IE and different adoption rates made it difficult to ensure that VP worked well for all of our customers around the world.

VantagePoint v10.0 no longer depends on external browsers.  This will help ensure our customers have better performance and fewer compatibility problems in the future.

Bug fixes and performance improvements

  • VPv10.0 fixes some relatively obscure and infrequent bugs
  • There are many performance improvements, most notably the time it takes to open big lists in big datasets has been cut by orders of magnitude.
New user interface simplifies the workflow and improves the user’s experience

Aduna update SEP2015 - 3

Symptoms and Resolution

Java Security Warning

You may see the following warning:

Aduna update SEP2015 - 1

Java requires that our supporting jar files be periodically re-signed to ensure that they are safe for distribution. This period elapsed recently and we’ve had to re-sign those files. Those are included in the update.

Maps with no records

It’s also possible that in rare cases you may get an Aduna Map with no records for some/all items that should have them. This has also been fixed by regenerating the Key field used to match records to the mapped items.

Aduna update SEP2015 - 2

Improved error handling for updating Java

Now the macro checks that Java version 1.8 or higher is installed.

Symptom

Normally, when you double-click on a TDA file in Windows, TDA will start up and load the file.  In a few TDA installations this does not happen.  This FAQ describes a way to restore this feature.

Cause

Depending on the history of TDA installations on your computer, the Registry settings may not be set correctly for this feature.

Workaround

Requirements: These steps require Administrator permissions.

1.  Open the Registry Editor and delete this key if present:
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ThomsonDataAnalyzer.Document\shell\open\ddeexec

2.  Add this key:
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ThomsonDataAnalyzer.Document\shell\open\command
     with this "String" value:
          TDA.exe %1

Thomson Data Analyzer™ 6 gives you more power to analyze data than ever before. A new 64-bit version opens up new options for analyzing large data sets; advanced visualizations help you explore your data in new ways, and updated designs for the Summary page and the Company, Technology, and Company Comparison reports make it easier to find the information you need.

64-bit version

The new 64-bit version of TDA lets you use more RAM on a 64-bit OS to work with more data and perform faster analyses.

New visualizations

New visualizations let you explore the hierarchical classification codes (IPC and CPC) in your patent data.

The Plot Classification report provides three visualizations:

VISUALIZATION DESCRIPTION SAMPLE
Circle Pack Display classifications in concentric circles. Larger circles represent higher level classifications, and smaller circles inside those circles represent related lower level classifications.

The size of each circle represents how many documents in your selection have that classification.
Circle Pack example
Treemap Displays classifications in a table. Table headers of each color represent higher level classifications, and individual cells represent the lowest level classifications in your analysis.

The total area of cell (or a header and related cells) represents how many documents have that classification.
Treemap example
Sunburst Display classifications symbols as rings and slices of a circle chart. The inner rings represent higher level classifications, and outer rings represent lower levels. Varying colors from dark (inner) to light (outer) helps visualize the hierarchy.

The relative area of each slice to other slices in the same ring indicates how many documents have that classification.
Sunburst example

Patent Vital Signs

Evaluate the patents in your data set to determine their current legal status. This provides a more nuanced version of "dead or alive" reports by examining kind codes and current legal status to categorize patents along a gradient of statuses from "likely active" to "likely expired."

This means Aduna Cluster Maps can be created and viewed without an internet connection.

Maintenance Release Update to TDAv5 (November 6, 2013)

Search Technology is happy to announce that a Maintenance Update for TDAv5 is now available on our downloads site.  To access it, simply select Help->Visit Downloads Page from TDA's menu or login to our download site with your account's username and password, and look for Thomson Data Analyzer v5.0 - Full Installation and Upgrade [06 NOV 2013].

This release fixes a number of bugs identified through internal and external testing. The changes mostly involved scripts or the new parent/child fields.

ADUNA CLUSTER MAPS

Due to changes in Java's security policies, the code for the Aduna macro must now be hosted on https://www.theVantagePoint.com/tda-downloads and downloaded as needed when you run the script and anytime an Aduna Cluster Map is rendered in TDA. The Aduna macro should be started from TDA in the usual way (the button or Scripts menu).  The macro takes care of downloading the necessary library files from the web site.  IMPORTANT NOTE: This means Aduna Cluster Maps can only be created or viewed when your computer is connected to the internet and can access and download Java resources from https://www.theVantagePoint.com/tda-downloads.

INSTALLATION

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of TDA, Windows Installer will automatically update the previous version as part of the installation process. Your license and any custom thesauri or import filters will be unaffected by this update.

We have posted new updates to the VantagePoint macros for:

  • Aduna Cluster Maps
  • Matrix Viewer

Requirements: Java Version 7 Update 51

You may remember that late in 2013, a Java update broke the VantagePoint Aduna Cluster Map and Matrix Viewer visualizations.  The essence of the problem was the Java update did not like running Java resources loaded from a local application, even though our Java resources are digitally signed by a trusted source.

In November 2013, we responded with an update to the Aduna Cluster Maps macro. That update changed the Aduna macro to use Java resources downloaded from our secure web site at run-time.  But this required you to be connected to the Internet to create or view an Aduna Cluster map.  We were unable to create a workable solution for Matrix Viewer, so we removed it from the downloads page.

Now there is good news!  The latest Java update (Java Version 7 Update 51) fixed their bug, and we are pleased to announce that both the Aduna Cluster Maps and Matrix Viewer macros will now work as they always have.  You do not need to be connected to the internet.

You can download the latest versions now using the "VantagePoint downloads" link in the VP Analyst Guide or from the VantagePoint Help menu select "Visit Downloads Page."

Release Notes for the 06 NOV 2013 Maintenance Release

Java-based Visualizations (Aduna Cluster Map and Matrix Viewer)

Due to recent changes in Java's security policies, the code for the Aduna macro will now be hosted ontheVantagePoint.com and downloaded as needed when you run the script and anytime an Aduna Cluster Map is rendered in VantagePoint.  This means Aduna Cluster Maps can only be created or viewed when your computer is connected to the internet and can access and use Java resources downloaded from https://www.theVantagePoint.com.

Also because of changes in Java, the Matrix Viewer script has been removed while we evaluate potential replacements.

Other Changes

  • Updated IPC8 thesauri
  • Updated Excel import to fix bugs reported while importing some Excel 2010 files
  • XML Import Wizard would under certain conditions create invalid import filters - fixed
  • Bubble Chart macro would give an error if no Year field exists in the dataset - fixed
  • Fixed bugs related to modifying Child Fields
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in empty groups being deleted when new fields are created

July 19, 2012

Dear VantagePoint user,

Yesterday, we discovered a serious bug in VantagePoint that prevents users from saving changes to groups. This is a new symptom that affects VPT files changed since Friday, July 13th, and will affect all VPT files in the future unless you update VantagePoint. Because groups affect so many functions in VantagePoint, we are recommending that ALL USERS SHOULD UPDATE THEIR VANTAGEPOINT INSTALLATIONS.

If you have an active installation of VantagePoint, you can use either the “Help->Check for Updates” or “Help->Visit Downloads Page” menu items to access the update file. The update file will be dated 18 JUL 2012.

To update, simply download and run the installation package. You will not need to uninstall the older version first or reactivate your VantagePoint license. Downloading and installing this update will not affect your import filters, keywords lists, or custom thesaurus files, but it may reset your toolbars or other preferences.Again, ALL USERS SHOULD UPDATE VANTAGEPOINT!

Sincerely,

Your VantagePoint Customer Support Team

Overview:

When you are working with large datasets in Derwent Data Analyzer, you may see an error message that you are running out of RAM. The following guidelines may help you to free up some system memory and continue to work. Which guidelines to apply will depend on your computer hardware, your Operating System, your analytical needs, and where you are in the workflow process. Strategies discussed in this document include:

  • Use a 64-bit Operating System and use the 64-bit version of Derwent Data Analyzer with at least 16GB RAM and preferably more.
  • Close other programs that are not essential to your analysis.
  • Import a small number of fields at first; Use “Import More Fields” to add other fields later.

Use a 64-bit OS, 64-bit Derwent Data Analyzer, and Install a Lot of RAM

Derwent Data Analyzer is available in both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version, and is subject to the per-process memory usage limits of the operating system.

If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, you must use the 32-bit version of Derwent Data Analyzer.  The maximum amount of memory that 32-bit Derwent Data Analyzer can use is 2 gigabytes, which is not sufficient for serious analysis. On a 64-bit Windows system, 32-bit Derwent Data Analyzer can use only up to 3 GB - still not sufficient for serious analysis.  These limits exist regardless of how much physical memory the computer has installed.

If you have a 64-bit Operating System, you should use the 64-bit version of Derwent Data Analyzer with at least 16GB RAM and preferably more.  For most professional versions of 64-bit Windows, 64-bit Derwent Data Analyzer can use up to 128GB of RAM.

Close Non-essential Programs and *.vpt Files.

If you have other applications running that are not essential to your workflow, close them to make more system memory available for Derwent Data Analyzer to use. If you have more than one Derwent Data Analyzer data file (*.vpt) open, close all open data files except the one in which you are currently working.

Maintain a Dataset with as Few Fields as Possible

When you maintain a dataset with only the essential fields, you also keep the size (in MB) of the *.vpt file on the disk as small as possible. This is especially important when you import large data files.  The recommended approach is to start Derwent Data Analzyer from the Windows Start menu with no dataset open and use the Import Wizard.  In the Home ribbon click New Analysis > Use Import Filter, and then follow the steps in the Wizard.  It is advisable to import only the “Title” field at first, so you do not run out of memory before you save the *.vpt file to a disk. Once you have saved your dataset as a *.vpt file, exit and restart Derwent Data Analyzer (to free up as much memory as possible) and open your saved dataset. You can use “Import More Fields” (on the “Refine” ribbon) to add other fields you need after your data is imported and saved to a *.vpt file.

Here is a useful table to guide you in selecting a minimum set of fields:

Minimum Field Set
for the Cleanup Macro

Additional Fields Needed
for the Reporting Macros
[
defaults]

Additional Fields Needed
for the Pivot Charts

  1. Assignee Code - DWPI
  2. Assignee/Applicant
  3. Assignee/Applicant (long)
  4. DWPI Accession Number
  5. Inventor

  1. Country [Priority Countries]
  2. Year [Priority Years (earliest)]
  3. Technology [DWPI Manual Codes]

  1. Priority Number (long)
  2. Family Member Years
  3. Family Member Countries

Use discretion when choosing which fields to add. Whenever possible, avoid unnecessarily importing fields with Long Text (e.g. Patent Claims, Abstracts, etc.).

Fields with a very large number of items will also consume a lot of system resources. Examples of such fields include:

  • Fields with “NLP” Words or Phrases
  • “Cited References” fields and fields derived from Cited References (e.g. “Cited Authors” or “Cited Journals”).
  • Authors, Inventors, Full Organization Names, or fields with uncontrolled vocabulary terms (see note below)

Note: Delete existing large fields that are not in use, but only if they can be readily imported again using “Import More Fields.” Use caution not to delete fields that have Groups you want to keep or “Cleaned” fields. “Cleaned” fields cannot be readily re-imported with “Import More Fields,”[1], but the originating field on which the cleaning was done can usually be safely deleted.

Fields that include a lot of items also tend to have long tails on their record frequency distributions. That is, a vast majority of the terms will occur in only one or two records. When this is the case, consider creating a group of all terms that occur in at least N records. You can then use “Create Field using Group Items” to make a new field with far fewer items, and delete the originating, much larger field.

[1] If you saved your List Cleanup work as a thesaurus, you can re-import the original field, and run your saved thesaurus on that field.

(rev. 03 July 2018)

Operating Systems - Thomson Data Analyzer works on Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 platforms. Installations on any edition of Windows Server are not supported.

  • TDA can be used by all users with an account on the computer, and does not require elevated user account privileges.  However, the installation and license activation steps must be completed by a user with “Administrator” privileges.

  • While not a requirement for running Thomson Data Analyzer, some of our Visual Basic scripts also require Java.

  • TDA 64-bit PRO requires:
    • 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Windows 8
    • For VB scripts that use Java, the 64-bit version of Java is required
    • All previously installed 32-bit versions of TDA must be uninstallled before installing TDA 64-bit PRO
  • UAC note (VISTA and Win7): For TDAv2.1, User Account Controls must be "off".

Microsoft Excel

  • The TDA Company Report, Technology Report,  Company Comparison Report, and several other TDA scripts require Microsoft Excel (2003 or later).
  • The TDA Pivot Charts Report and Super Profile require Microsoft Excel (2007 or later).

Recommended Processor - Pentium 4 or better.

With processors, clock speed is the most important attribute to Thomson Data Analyzer. The math in Thomson Data Analyzer is inherently linear so multi-threading has little impact on Thomson Data Analyzer performance. Hyperthreaded or Dual core processors are only helpful if you intend to run other operations while running Thomson Data Analyzer. If purchasing a Dual Core processor, please insure that the clock speed of each of the individual processors is at least as fast as a standard single processor.

AMD processors also work well; however, we have experienced overheating problems when running Thomson Data Analyzer.

We do not recommend running Thomson Data Analyzer on machines with Celeron processors. They do not have the math co-processing capabilities required by Thomson Data Analyzer.

Memory - The minimum recommended operating RAM is 1 GB.
For large record sets (>10,000 records), 2GB (minimum) to 3GB (preferred) RAM is recommended.

Thomson Data Analyzer is a 32-bit program so the maximum RAM Windows supports is 4GB. We have found some issues with Windows support of memory between 3GB and 4GB so we recommend 3GB. Thomson Data Analyzer files can be quite large and it is much easier to work with them if they can be loaded into RAM. Since Windows XP now takes up over 300MB of RAM to operate, 1GB of total RAM is recommended as a minimum. If the operating system has to use Virtual Memory to load a file into Thomson Data Analyzer, performance will be slower.

Disk Space - Thomson Data Analyzer uses about 80MB of disk space. This does not include the disk space needed for your data files, which can be quite large - typically no less than 5MB/1000 records.

Recommended Hard Drive Speed - At least 7,200RMP or faster

Since Thomson Data Analyzer files can be quite large, a fast hard drive reduces the time required to load the file from storage to RAM. Standard drive sizes are usually more than sufficient for Thomson Data Analyzer file storage. If you are planning to work with large files on a regular basis, it is helpful to have two separate hard drives - one for the operating system and one for storage. We have found that the Windows operating system virtual memory function tends to severely fragment large files over time which slows down performance. If the virtual memory is on the first drive with the operating system and data is stored on the second drive, then the files are less fragmented. (In theory, partitioning a drive should work but we have found that a second drive performs better than a single drive with two partitions.)

Display - Graphical and tabular outputs of Thomson Data Analyzer require a minimum of 1024 x 768 screen resolution.

Data - In addition, Thomson Data Analyzer requires that you have access to sources of bibliographic data and database definition files for these data sources. Database definition files are available for many popular databases and custom definition files can be coded for virtually any structured text database.

Problem: Runtime Error and Crash importing records encoded as UTF-8 text.
